| Both James and Lily Potter are completely fictional characters in the books on Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling. They are the parents of Harry Potter. James Potter was Harry’s father, a courageous man with hazel eyes and a long sharp nose. He had a thin face like, Harry. His hair remained untidy, just like, Harry. He was nearly of the same height just as his son was during his school days. He was born in 1960 and attended the Hogwarts School from 1971 to 1978. The best friends and confidante of James are Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black. All these four are called Marauders. They had nicknames. Remus was Moony, Sirius was Padfoot, James was Prongs and Peter was Wormtail. All of them became Animagi, which was illegal.

Actually they did this vto give Remus Company as he involuntarily became a werewolf in the Shrieking Shack. Sirius was turned to a black dog, James became a stag and Peter turned to a rat. Harry’s patronus often turns to a stag, just as his father Prongs.
A rough idea about the character of Harry’s father, James Potter can be estimated from the comments on him from the other characters in the book. According to Severus Snape James was exceedingly arrogant. Remus says that he was pretty cool, while Sirius calls him an arrogant little berk. The evidence of James bullying Snape can be found. In the book “Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix” Harry agrees with the assessment by Snape about his father that he was indeed arrogant. This revelation made Harry quite depressed. But James once saved the life of Snape as Sirius attempted to goad him to Shrieking Shack, when Lupin was getting transformed into a werewolf.
In the story of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, Harry saw Snape, Sirius and James meeting each other as they were about to board the Hogwarts Express. He saw everything through the faint memory of Snape. Actually James never entertained dark Art and was visibly hostile towards Snape. He somewhat liked Sirius. Snape did not like James idea to be in Gryffindor for according to him, students in Gryffindor were well-built, but not brilliant. According to J K Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, Snape had soft corner for Lily, what James did not like and that factior to some extent molded his behavior towards Snape.
James used to be a bright student at Hogwarts. In the book, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, James is shown to be the Head Boy. “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” also says that Remus was a prefect boy, not James. It can be said that his creator J K Rowling kept certain imperfections in James, the father of the protagonist. He became the head boy at the seventh year mainly on the basis of seniority and his common sense.
James was a player in the team of Gryffindor Quidditch. In the film on “Philosopher’s Stone”, the mention of James, Harry and his friends are found. The name of James is enlisted on a plaque as a Seeker of the Quidditch team. In an interview J.K Rowling stated that James was a chaser. James used to play with a Golden Snitch and always rumple his hair style to give an idea that he has just finished a race of broomstick. Both James Potter and Snape were pranksters at their school. James’s wand was 11 inches long and was made with mahogany wood. Madam Rosmerta bears testimony to the fun loving nature of James Potter. The epilogue of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” says that Harry named his first child after the name of his father, James Potter.
