Legal disputes over the Harry Potter series

Created by J K Rowling, Harry Potter is one of the most popular fictitious characters ever created in this world. Harry Potter is a young wizard who has got super magical power for protecting goods from evils and is capable of destroying the evil power in the world of wizardry. Harry Potter is one of the most favorite super natural characters for the kids of this age and that is why there is an unending demand for the books of Harry Potter. All seven books of the Harry Potter series have been published and the amount of money that the publisher and the writer has earned in the lat 10 years is almost beyond imagination.

Realizing the huge craze about harry potter among young kids, five stories of the Harry Potter series have already been picturized and have successfully entertained people. But apart from all these great things there have been several negative attempts to capitalize on the huge popularity of this wonderful character and these have led many legal disputes over the Harry Potter series.

In the past six to seven years,author J K Rowling, her publishers and Time warner, the copyright owner of Harry Potter movies have sent several legal notices to people across the world and have taken strong legal actions in many cases. With rise in the popularity of the Harry Potter books and films, people all over the world have made several attempts to launch unauthorized and fake sequels of Harry Potter books and have faced legal notices from J K Rowling and her party for violating copyright. On the other hand, often the author herself and her party have been accused of violating copyrights themselves. In several cases Rowling and her part have been accused of stealing concepts from other books related to black magic or wizardry and copying it in the books of Harry Potter.

Legal disputes over the Harry Potter series also include the allegations made by American author named Nancy Stouffer against J K Rowling for stealing ideas from her book the Legend of Rah and the Muggles and Larry Potter and his Best Friend Lily. Stouffer alleged against in the year 1999 and the main reason behind her allegation was the use of the word 'muggles' by J K Rowling in her books. Besides, the name of the two main characteristics and their looks were also identical.

Speaking about legal disputes over the Harry Potter series one must not forget to mention about the legal actions taken by J K Rowling and her party against a Chinese ghostwriter who published an unauthorized Harry Potter book named Harry Potter and Leopard Walk Up to Dragon in the year 2002. The book was sold in large numbers in the China. But as a result of the legal actions taken by Rowling and his party the publisher of the fake book had to pay damages. in the same year another fake book named Harry Potter and the Porcelain Doll was also published in China and recently it has been discovered that more than 15 millions fake Harry Potter books are circulating in the country today. Even a fake version of Harry Potter and the Deadly hallows also appeared in China 10 days before the actual date of release of the book worldwide.
